Selection Process
Selection Process – General procedures for the PPGTO/UFSCar with specifications for possible foreign applicants
Admission of regular students to the Master’s and Doctoral Courses of the Graduate Studies Program of the Federal University of Sao Carlos (PPGTO/UFSCar) occurs through a specific and, in general, annual Selection Process for this purpose, as well as through an international cooperation agreement approved within the scope of UFSCar.
These processes are conducted by a selection committee composed of teachers from the PPGTO/UFSCar, and its rules are established by its Graduate Studies Commission (CPG) and disclosed via public notice published at the PPGTO website.
Vacancies are distributed in each of the lines of research, and applicants shall, at the time of registration, choose one of them. Applicants with an undergraduate degree (in the case of the Master's Course) or a master's degree (in the case of the Doctoral Course) issued abroad can participate in this processes and, in case they are approved, the CPG will conducted an analysis of the equivalence of the undergraduate or master's degrees with those existing in Brazil.
In general, the following documents are needed: Registration Form, Academic History of the undergraduate or master's course, Foreign Researcher Curriculum Vita, National Registry of Foreigners (RNE) (in the case of foreign applicants residing in Brazil) or Passport (in the case of foreign applicants not residing in Brazil), Diploma or Certificate of Completion of the undergraduate or master's course, and Research Project which, although in an initial proposal, will substantiate the master's thesis or the doctoral dissertation, clarifying the objective(s) of the work and the method to achieve such objective(s). The project shall provide fundamental elements for judging the importance, relevance and sufficiency of the research proposal in relation to the Program's area of concentration and the line of research in which the applicant will be admitted.
Fees stipulated each year are charged (approximately $50.00), and foreign applicants not residing in Brazil will be able to make the required payments in the period in which they are in the country.
The selection process for the PPGTO Master’s Course is conducted in three stages: I) Two exams: Test of Written Communication Skills (Portuguese) and Instrumental English Language Test, II) Research Project Assessment, and III) Public Oral Defense of the Research Project - all of which are eliminatory and the minimum scores for each of them are specified via public notice. Applicants who prove their knowledge by means of a recent proficiency certificate (valid for up to two and a half years) provided by an official institution may apply for exemption from the Instrumental English Language Test, according to the score presented in the specific public notice.
Foreign applicants may apply for exemption from the Test of Written Communication Skills (Portuguese), but must present this proficiency within 18 months after enrollment.
The selection process for the PPGTO Doctoral Course is conducted in two stages: I) Research Project Assessment and II) Public Oral Defense of the Research Project - both eliminatory.
English and Portuguese proficiency tests will be required in due time during the course.
Applicants approved in the selection processes must enroll in the respective courses at the Program Secretary according to instructions and calendars in force at the time.
For the enrollment of students with diplomas issued abroad, the CPG-PPGTO will conduct an analysis of the equivalence of the undergraduate or master's degree with those existing in the country. After acceptance of the equivalence, enrollment will be approved subject to the presentation of the respective diploma within a maximum period of one year as of the month of the initial enrollment. In the case of international reciprocity or similarity agreements, that revalidation shall be made as provided for therein.
